Tommy Koulax purchases
“The Shack” at Beverly and
Rampart boulevards in Los Angeles. Starts serving Hamburgers and Hot
Dogs topped with his special recipe all beef chili.

1946

Tommy keeps supplies for his business in the trunk of his car and in an ice-filled Coca Cola cooler; there is very little parking during day-time hours due to the other business located on the property. His business does well after the others close for the day.

Belmont High School
and USC students
make Tommy’s a
favorite place to eat.

1950

Tommy incorporates and purchases three of the four corner properties at Beverly and Rampart boulevards including “The Shack” property. He now has storage and opens a 2nd kitchen to serve his menu.

Students, local artists,
city council persons,
LAPD officers, Los
Angeles Times writers,
Hollywood actors as well
as tourists start to visit
Tommy’s.

1960

Tommy opens additional restaurants in Eagle Rock, Tujunga, Burbank, North Hills, Van Nuys and Fountain Valley.

Tommy’s is celebrated in news articles published in Japan, Korea, Sweden, Philippines and USA.

Several movies now
feature Tommy’s.

1970

Tommy’s Egg and Sausage
Breakfast Sandwich is served.

French Fries are introduced to all Tommy’s restaurants except Los Angeles which still offer “chips”.

Tommy’s celebrates 40
years
on May 15, 1986.

“Tommy’s Day” is proclaimed by Los Angeles City Coucil.

1980

French Fries are
introduced to Tommy’s
Los Angeles.

Tommy Koulax passes
in 1992; Tommy’s family
continues to operate his
chain of restaurants in
Tommy’s tradition.

Tommy’s first free standing (proto-type) restaurant building w/ drive thru is constructed in Hollywood, California.

Tommy’s celebrates 50 years on May 15, 1996.

1990

Tommy’s expands into Nevada with two restaurants in the Las Vegas area.

Tommy’s operates a web-site and offers shipping of chili and merchandise around the U.S.

Facebook and Twitter becomes another medium for Tommy’s fans to gather.

Tommy’s celebrates its 60th and 65th Anniversaries; Tommy’s crowns its Ultimate Fan from hundreds of stories and photos of fans growing up with Tommy’s posted on the web-site.

Tommy’s expands into mobile catering with the introduction of the “Shack on Wheels™”

Tommy’s adds new menu items such as the “Breakfast Burrito” and “The Caliente Burger” and limited time offer menu item such as “Sweet Tea” and a 44oz. co-branded collectors cup with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
